The best five movies to see this fall

By Parker Beckham

With fall finally here, there are plenty of new movies coming to theaters that would serve as a perfect opportunity for students to take a break from classes. This season has a mix of genres, including comedy, drama, horror, superhero and action. Whether you want to see something with friends, or just need a break from studying, these five upcoming releases all offer something different.

Digger – Oct. 2

For those who enjoy comedy and drama, Digger could be an interesting choice. The movie stars Tom Cruise as the world’s most powerful man, who goes on a frantic mission to save humanity from a disaster that he helped to cause. The movie combines comedy with more serious themes, making it different from the typical action movie. Fans of Tom Cruise may also be interested in seeing him take on a more serious role, opposed to his typical action flicks.

The Social Reckoning – Oct. 9

Those who spend a lot of time on social media may find The Social Reckoning especially interesting. Serving as a sequel to 2010’s The Social Network, the movie follows Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison), a former Facebook employee, as she works with journalist Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White) to expose information about the company. The film is based on real events and focuses on technology, journalism and the effects of social media.

This could end up being a good choice for those interested in social media, business or journalism. It also comes from director Aaron Sorkin, who also wrote and directed The Social Network, so fans of the original may want to see how he continues the story.

Other Mommy – Oct. 9

For those who would rather be scared than think about social media, Other Mommy offers a completely different experience. The horror movie follows an 8-year-old girl who encounters a frightening monster that looks and sounds exactly like her mother. As the situation grows more dangerous, the family has to figure out what is actually going on.

The movie could appeal to horror fans who enjoy supernatural stories and suspense. With its disturbing subject matter and R rating, it is also aimed at an older audience.

Street Fighter – Oct. 16

Video game fans have a reason to head to theaters with Street Fighter. The movie follows Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken (Noah Centineo) as they are brought together for the World Warrior Tournament by Chun-Li (Callina Liang). The tournament includes familiar characters from the games, including M. Bison (David Dastmalchian), Guile (Cody Rhodes), Blanka (Jason Momoa) and Akuma (Roman Reigns).

For those who grew up playing Street Fighter, this movie could be a fun way to see familiar characters brought to life. Even for people who are not familiar with the games, the action-oriented story could make it an entertaining movie to see with friends.

Clayface – Oct. 23

DC fans looking for something darker can check out Clayface. The movie follows actor Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries) after he becomes horribly disfigured and turns to an experimental treatment to restore his appearance. However, the treatment comes with dangerous consequences.

Unlike a typical big budget superhero movie, Clayface leans into body horror and thriller elements while exploring identity, revenge, and the consequences of scientific experimentation. All of this under a relatively small budget relying heavily on cool practical effects. This movie could be a good choice for people who enjoy comic book movies but want something darker and more serious.

Something for Everyone

This fall’s movies cover a wide variety of genres, so people have several options depending on what they enjoy. Whether it’s comedy and drama, real world stories, horror, video games or comic books, there is a movie for almost every type of movie fan. With these five major releases coming in October, there will be plenty of opportunities to take a break from school and spend a night at the theater.
