Tensions rise as midterm elections approach

We’ve all seen the nonstop ads on TV throughout the summer, and even now as candidates push through the last stretch of campaigning before the general election. The Michigan state primary election happened on Aug. 4, where people voted for the candidates of their choosing for the upcoming general election in November.

For Governor, Democrat Jocelyn Benson and Republican John James run against each other. This year’s candidates for Michigan Senate are Republican Mike Rogers, Democrat Haley Stevens and Democrat Abdul El-Sayed. The election also decides the House members, Attorney General and Secretary of State.

Politics in America are always a hot topic, but with midterm elections coming up, tensions between parties continue to rise. Heated ads have been circulating on TV since springtime of this year. We see one candidate slander another, then vice versa. 

It can be tiring to see the same fight repeatedly when you’re trying to do something relaxing, such as enjoying a TV show. However, pushing past the annoyance to stay properly informed is important.

Political ads rarely have useful, let alone credible, information in them, so taking what you see on TV and doing your own research with it is essential to stay in the loop. On Nov. 3, Election Day, we’ll all get some peace when the voting, along with the battling political ads, come to an end. 

Although this isn’t the presidential election, it is equally as crucial in the fight for democracy. Every vote matters. Register to vote online at michigan.gov or go to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to register in person.
