How free is ‘free speech’
By Jacob Teets
On March 18, Delta College is hosting a discussion in the lecture theater from 2-3:30 p.m. on topics ranging from the Red Scare and McCarthyism to “cancel culture. ” The panelists will be discussing dissent in democracy from the past as well as the present.
The event will discuss free speech and if it’s really as free as we’re told and how the lifeblood of democracy has been celebrated and silenced throughout American history. They’ll also be focusing on unpacking the boundaries that free expression has had on America throughout its history.
The four panelists for the event will be Professor of History Amy French, former Professor of Communication and current Delta College Trustee Barb Handley-Miller, Professor of Political Science Lisa Lawrason and Associate Professor of Philosophy Mark Balawender.
If you would like to know more about the event before March 18, you can contact Amy French at amyfrench@delta.edu or Chris DeEulis at christopherdeeulis@delta.edu.
