Delta basketball stringing wins together
By Jacob Teets
The Delta Pioneers’ basketball season is winding down, and the Michigan Community College Athletic Association tournament is approaching quickly, starting Feb. 27. The mens and womens squads are staring down the barrel of the postseason after stringing together a pair of three-game winning streaks. Can they continue their winning ways, and if so, what do they have to do to be successful in the tournament?
For the women it’s simple. With five games left on the schedule, they sit at a record of 13-10 and should have solid seeding when the tournament begins.
In their game on Feb. 7 against the Kirtland Community College Firebirds, freshman forward Aya Mosley scored 27 points on 13-18 from the field and added three rebounds, with four steals to top off her excellent performance.
With two of their three victories being 40-point and 30-point blowouts, that’s the key for the women going into the tournament. Big wins like those could lead to a strong run for the women come the end of February.
The men are playing as underdogs going into the tournament, sitting at a record of 7-13 after winning three in a row. It hasn’t been the best season for the men, but winning three of their final five may light a fire under the team going into the tournament.
They also have sophomore guard Sir Real Smith, who averages 32.6 points per game. The team can lean on Smith to take the load off other players with double teams and get open shots.
Whether it’s the men or the women, come tourney time one of or both teams could surprise some opponents and potentially upset a top seeded team.
