The Butman-Fish Library is hosting their Race & Riot event in honor of Black History Month and the Detroit Rebellion of 1967 on February 19 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
The Detroit Rebellion, also known as the 1967 Uprising or the 12th Street Riot, was a violent period of civil unrest in Detroit Michigan. The riot lasted 9 days and corresponded with various riots across the nation at the time. The cause of the riots stemmed from police brutality, institutional racism and racial prejudice.
Dr. Jennifer Vannette from the Castle Museum of Saginaw County History will be the lead speaker at this event, exploring the historical conditions that led to this uprising, what happened and why it matters.
This event will be held on Feb. 19 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Butman-Fish Library meeting room, located at 1716 Hancock St. Saginaw, Mich.
