Let’s talk about relaxation for a moment. My go-to joke when it’s time to unwind is, “I’ve just
entered Potato Mode—engagements are now off.” But recently, I’ve been thinking about how to
make my downtime feel less like slipping into “frump mode” and more like real, quality rest
time. You know that feeling where you’re technically relaxing, but it doesn’t actually feel all that
restful? Sure, I’m zoning out, but then I look up later and wonder if I just wasted my downtime.

So, I’m on a mission to upgrade my “potato mode” with things that feel like real, stylish
relaxation. Instead of just flopping onto the couch and hiding from the world, I’ll do something
low-key but still enjoyable. For me, that means focusing on little personal touches that make
lounging feel purposeful. I’ve learned that the right loungewear can make a difference—like soft
joggers or an oversized sweater that’s both comfortable and put together. There’s something
about wearing clothes I actually enjoy, even if it’s just for a quiet evening at home, that elevates
my mood and makes relaxation feel like a special experience rather than an afterthought.
Fashion and style can be powerful tools for enhancing how we experience rest. Even something
as simple as putting on a cozy outfit that feels intentional can make the difference between
feeling like I’m just “wasting time” and feeling like I’m having quality downtime. And with that
slight shift in approach, it feels like I’m giving myself permission to unwind in a way that’s
intentional and indulgent.
For me, that might mean journaling, flipping through an inspiring book, or even putting on some
comfy clothes. The goal? To relax in a way that lets me feel good—so good, in fact, that I
wouldn’t mind answering the door in my downtime look. Effortless confidence!

I also try to add a few small rituals to my routine to make relaxation more enjoyable. A face
mask, a cup of tea, or a soft blanket can turn a typical lazy moment into something calming and
intentional. By experiencing the world through my different senses, my rest just seems to be
more rounded. These small acts of self-care, combined with stylish yet comfortable loungewear,
create a space where I’m not just checking out but actually doing something I’ll enjoy, even if
it’s low-key.
The big thing for me is recognizing where I’m overstressed and letting that part of my mind and
body rest. As a student, the part of my brain that’s always in “learning mode” needs breaks, just
like any other muscle. Downtime can be just as refreshing as a workout recovery if you approach
it right. So maybe next time I slip into potato mode, it’ll be with a little more thought, a lot more
style, and the realization that relaxation is just as valuable as anything else on my to-do list.
