Delta College kicked off its Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations, encouraging students to attend activities and events throughout the month on campus and in the community. Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.
“Everywhere around you, there’s culture of all kinds. It’s important to understand where people are coming from,” student Bianca Aldrich says about the importance of celebrating Hispanic heritage in America.
Grace Richards, another student, spoke about the importance of being mindful of other cultures.
“I feel like people overlook anything that isn’t U.S. history from eighth grade,” Richards says. “I think it’s really important because it just gets overlooked by people and they don’t bother to ask about anything outside of America.”
Hispanic Heritage Month originated in the United States but has become a global celebration since its creation in 1968. While it was originally established by Congressman Esteban Torres to celebrate Mexican independence, the month now embodies a wide variety of experiences throughout Hispanic culture.
The student body advocates for a diversity of cultures, and the Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations will continue throughout the month with more events, food and fun. Flyers and more information about events can be found around the student lounge near the Red Brix Café.
