Instead of the typical revelry and debauchery so often depicted in Hollywood, try something new this spring break: hands-on community service. Alternative breaks around the world are usually a drug and alcohol-free environment where students can focus on a selected social issue, and directly impact communities.
For Delta, that means partnering up with the new LifeLong Learning Urban Farming class series. Delta students have the opportunity to get down in the dirt as they travel to Chicago to learn about the importance of growing local, sustainable produce, while volunteering with urban farming organizations.
Students will spend March 1 travelling by Amtrak and will stay at Chicago’s Hostelling International. Lead by Linda Petee, Delta College’s Sustainability Coordinator, the rest of the week will be spent working in urban farms and local community gardens. However, there is also potential for sightseeing before the group leaves on March 6.
If interested in participating in this year’s Alternative Spring Break, a $200 deposit needs to be provided to the Cashier’s Office by this Friday, Feb. 6. This amount will cover the full cost of the trip. Any Delta student can join; enrollment in an Urban Farming class is not required.
In addition to the deposit, students must file a Student Participation Application with Amy McPike in the Student Engagement office. This year there are only 10 spots available, which are first-come, first-serve. More trip details will be provided at a Feb. 20 on-campus, mandatory trip retreat.
