Delta College to host several events in honor of Black History Month

By GABRIELLE MARTIN, Staff Reporter.

Black History Month is right around the corner and Delta College has a variety of events scheduled to help educate students, faculty, and the community during February.

Saginaw native, author and filmmaker Lorenzo Pierson will speak and moderate a panel discussion at the Ricker Center on Feb. 20 at 6 p.m. The discussion will center on why African Americans feel targeted by the police and what can be done to build positive relationships between the police and the community.

“One of the things I like about Lorenzo’s series is it’s very informative and it’s geared toward finding solutions to the problems in the African American community … not just what was done wrong but what can be done in the community to solve the problem,” says John Neal, Multicultural Advisor at Delta, who helped coordinate the event.

Neal will host a “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” style game show on Delta’s main campus at 11 a.m. on Feb. 24. The questions will revolve around Black History Month. Students will gather in teams of four or five. The teams will then compete against each other for the grand prize of $100. Teams will have the opportunity to use a lifeline if unsure about a question. The lifelines are: phone the host, poll the crowd, and of course 50/50.

Here’s a hint for anyone interested in participating in the game show: there will be information available around the library that could help you in the game.

These are just two of the events that will be taking place during Black History Month. The rest are listed below and are held at Delta’s main campus unless otherwise stated:
