Join Central Michigan University (CMU) to celebrate the 34th annual “Celebrating Life” Pow Wow from March 18 to 19. It will take place at the McGuirk Arena located at 300 East Broomfield Road in Mt. Pleasant. The pow wow is used as a way for people to celebrate Native American culture by coming together to dance, sing, share crafts, make new friends, and much more.
Saturday’s event will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with grand entries taking place at 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Sunday’s event will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with the grand entrance taking place at 12:00 p.m. General admission is $7; children ten and under are free, along with SCIT members and CMU students with I.D.
The event will also include five contests the the public can enter for a chance to win cash prizes. Registration is $10 per dancer and $100 per drummer. The contest categories are as follows,
- A drum contest
- A teen dance contest ages 12 to 17
- A golden age dance contest for ages 50 and up
- A youth dance contest for ages six to 11
- An adult dance contest ages 18 to 49
The first-place winner for the drum contest will win $4,000; second place will win $3,000; and third place will win $2,000.
The first-place winner for the teen dance contest will win $200; second place will win $150; and third place will win $100.
The first-place winner for the golden age contest will win $400; second place will win $300; and third place will win $200.
The first-place winner for the youth dance contest will win $100; second place will win $75; and third place will win $50.
The first-place winner for the adult dance contest will win $400; second place will win $300; and third place will win $200.
